Our Programs
Education
The Sarlahi Social Welfare Foundation built and runs the Subudhi Mahanand Vidyashram, a school with more than 260 students from the poorest families in the area. The main language of instruction is English, broadening students’ horizons and giving graduates access to opportunities in higher education and government. Strengthening the normal curriculum, the list of core classes has been expanded to include the Sanskrit language, yoga, music, and painting.
Library
The Subudhi Mahanand Academic Library, built with help from the Nepal Library Foundation of Canada, has a growing collection of books for students. Future expansion plans include a computer lab with Internet access.
Healthcare
Free medical care is provided to those who would not otherwise be able to afford it. A medical camp provides free services such as cataract surgery and women’s health services, and free medicine. Regular medical checks are also given to children.
Environmental Protection
The foundation is currently operating a reforestation pilot project. Local farmers are given one free tree to plant on their land for every tree that they purchase. Each village in the pilot project receives approximately two thousand trees per year.
Cooperative Farming
In the planning phase for the moment, the goal of this project is to provide villages with agricultural equipment that they would otherwise not be able to afford. By organizing groups of farmers at the village level, maintenance and operating costs for the equipment can be brought down to an affordable, sustainable level for individual farmers. The cost of the equipment will be the responsibility of the foundation, thereby eliminating the most significant barrier to the modernization of agriculture in Nepal: initial cost to the farmer.
